The Kawayan Communicator (TKC) gathered student-journalists of ISU-Cauayan Campus (ISU-CC) for a two-day journalism seminar and training workshop last November 8-9 to hone their skills in journalism.
With the theme, “Ready, Set, Write! Journalism Training for Competitive Success”, participants acquired new knowledge and techniques in various journalism categories.
TKC, the official publication of ISU-CC, conducted the seminar to broaden student-journalists’ understanding and help them create accurate, engaging, and insightful content.
“Each of you, with the skills you will acquire here, will have the capacity to contribute meaningfully to our society, to inspire change, and to be champions of truth,” said Dr. Precila Delima, represented by SSC Adviser Dionicio Gante, in her inspirational message.
Two prominent names in journalism namely, Prof. Ben Domingo Jr., Chairperson of Technical Committee for Journalism, and Melvin Gascon, Philippine Daily Inquirer Journalist, pioneered the discussions of different write-ups in journalism and its principle.
Domingo and Gascon discussed the fundamentals, techniques, and guides in sports writing, column writing, editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, and page and layout designing, and news writing, feature writing, photojournalism, and editorial cartooning, respectively.
Joining them on the second day were ISU-CC instructors Kevin Dela Calzada for development communication writing, and Dr. Krisha Camille Angoluan for poetry writing.
Student-journalists from The Forum Publication of ISU-Echague also attended the seminar to learn the essentials of journalism.
“Journalism does not end in writing, editing, and publishing. Journalists should continue to be willing to learn and improve, and to strive to be more,” said Karen Joy Bacudo, TKC Filipino News Editor.
Empowered with new profound skills and knowledge on journalism, the student-journalists are looking forward to applying these to their future endeavors as deliverers of truth.
