Empowering educators at regional convention

by Rheyven Rose Labayog

Four students and one college supervisor from the College of Education attended the first Regional Preservice Teachers and College Supervisors Convention, anchoring the theme, “Future Educators’ Empowerment: Shaping Tomorrow’s Classrooms” at Philippine Normal University North Luzon (PNUNL), November 5.

Allen Jonathan Cusi, Rheyven Rose Labayog, Rodgie Andejer, and Sammer Martin represented Isabela State University-Cauayan Campus (ISU-CC) at the convention, accompanied by their college supervisor, Peter John Villaflores, Program Chair of Bachelor of Physical Education.

Representatives from various state universities and colleges in the region also participated, including PNUNL, ISU-Angadanan, Isabela Colleges (IC), Our Lady of Pillar College-Cauayan (OLPCC), Northeast Luzon Adventist College (NELAC), and Quirino State University (QSU).

The convention aimed to provide a platform for preservice teachers and supervisors to share insights on the MATATAG Curriculum and examine its key challenges and opportunities to inform teaching practices.

Additionally, the event sought to promote collaboration among participants to develop practical solutions for diverse classroom needs, as emphasized in the statement of purpose by Dr. Clemente Aguinaldo, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Development.

“We are here to improve our program, our teacher education curriculum, and this is the right time for us to really come into this activity to share and exchange ideas on how we can better deliver our teacher education program in the region,” Dr. Leticia Aquino, Dean for Academics and the Hub of PNU-NL, highlighted.

As a dynamic platform for exploring important issues and leading the way for preservice teachers, Convention Speaker Dr. Lordino Antonio, School Principal III of Alicia National High School, discussed the MATATAG Curriculum.

Antonio’s presentation covered key topics, including the General Shape of the MATATAG Curriculum, Curriculum Review Findings, Curriculum Revision, an Overview of the Instructional Design Framework, and Unpacking Learning Competencies.

Moreover, to address the changing educational landscape, the convention also initiated the development of the Regional Association of College Supervisors and Preservice Teachers with possible goals that include: 1) enhancing professional development in the region; 2) strengthening mentorship and support networks; and 3) promoting regional standards of teaching excellence.
